Biography
Owing to his lengthy tenure in Detroit combined with a limited discography, Marcus Belgrave frequently escaped widespread recognition. This versatile trumpeter possessed the skill to navigate both hard bop and free jazz terrains, having received some instruction from Clifford Brown at the age of 17. Between 1954 and 1959, he traveled extensively alongside Ray Charles, while also securing chances to perform in the ensembles led by Charles Mingus and Max Roach. His relocation to Detroit in 1963 marked the beginning of sustained involvement in both teaching and session work. Starting primarily in the 1980s, he contributed to recordings by artists including McCoy Tyner, David Newman, Art Hodes in duet settings, David Murray, Geri Allen—who numbered among his pupils—swing tenor Franz Jackson, and Sammy Price. Additionally, Belgrave appeared as a featured performer with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Other notable students under his guidance encompassed Bob Hurst, Kenny Garrett, and James Carter, thereby allowing Marcus Belgrave to exert considerable influence on jazz through these connections. Heart failure claimed his life in May 2015 when he reached 78 years of age.
