Although her link to Miles Davis brought Marilyn Mazur the widest notice, her performances have unfolded across numerous other contexts. Of Polish and African-American parentage, she has resided in Denmark since age six. Initial studies in classical piano and dance gave way to drums and improvised music. After attending the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music she worked locally, and in 1985 she appeared on Palle Mikkelborg’s recording of “Aura” with Davis. She soon began an intermittent association with the trumpeter that lasted through 1989, followed by engagements with Gil Evans and Wayne Shorter. In 1989 she founded the band Future Song, and in 1994 Mazur made her debut as a leader for Storyville with the adventurous Pulse Unit, whose program consisted chiefly of her own compositions.
