The Dutch pianist Wolfert Brederode creates refined and tuneful compositions, frequently partnering with fellow musicians for releases on the ECM label. Born in 1974, he pursued studies in both classical and jazz piano at The Royal Conservatory of The Hague. He began composing in 1996 and issued his first recording, Alternate Views, one year later. A sustained partnership with vocalist Susanne Abbuehl further strengthened his profile; he contributed to every ECM project she released and helped shape portions of the material on her 2001 debut April as well as its 2006 successor Compass. That association paved the way for his own ECM debut, the 2007 quartet album Currents, which was followed by another quartet recording, 2011’s Post Scriptum. He subsequently established the Wolfert Brederode Trio, which issued Black Ice in 2019 and Ruins and Remain in 2022.
