Biography
Marty Morell holds the record for the longest tenure with the Bill Evans Trio of any drummer, covering seven years. This understated yet persistently inventive musician studied at the Manhattan School of Music. Before entering Evans’s group he performed with the Al Cohn-Zoot Sims Quintet in 1966, Henry "Red" Allen (including on record dates), Gary McFarland, Steve Kuhn, and Gabor Szabo. Between 1968 and 1975 Morell performed, recorded, and circled the globe with Bill Evans and Eddie Gomez. After parting from Evans he relocated to Toronto, where he has worked chiefly as a studio percussionist while making occasional returns to the jazz circuit, among them a period with Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass from 1978 to 1981. To the present day Morell has never led a recording session under his own name.
