Martyrdöd emerged in 2001 as a Gothenburg-based Swedish quartet whose sound fuses crust and d-beat punk with elements drawn from extreme and black metal. Vocalist and guitarist Mikael Kjellman, bassist Anton Grönholm, drummer Jens Bäckelin, and guitarist and backing vocalist Pontus Redig formed the initial lineup. Grönholm departed shortly afterward, after which the group cycled through several replacement bassists.

The band’s self-titled debut album appeared in 2003. A split EP titled We Walk the Line with Sunday Morning Einsteins followed. In Extremis arrived via Havoc Records in 2005, earning widespread European praise that secured support slots on multiple tours. Sekt, issued in 2009, marked their first release to reach audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.

Following headline performances throughout Europe, Martyrdöd joined the Southern Lord roster. The 2012 album Paranoia received broad critical acclaim and introduced a wider sonic palette marked by more dynamic guitar leads and harmonic dissonances. Bassist Fredrik Reinedahl, whose production and engineering credits include work with Sólstafir, Abandon, Burst, and Dimension Zero, among others, joined in time for the 2014 release Elddop.
