During 1968, as Apple Records searched for fresh acts, British supermodel Twiggy introduced Welsh singer Mary Hopkin to Paul McCartney. The waifish soprano achieved massive global success via her initial Apple release, the melancholy yet rabble-rousing ballad "Those Were the Days," released late that year; the track even ousted the Beatles' "Hey Jude" from the U.K. number one spot. Paul McCartney extended his assistance by producing Hopkin's debut album and composing her next single, "Goodbye," which proved another hit. Hopkin, more at ease with refined, precious ballads and folky pop than with rock, notched several additional U.K. hits, though she failed to crack the American Top 40 once more. Her sales waned in tandem with Apple's decline in the early '70s.
