Louisiana marks the birthplace of Mary McBride, yet she spent her childhood in the Washington, D.C., region, where an early passion for music took hold. Relocating to New York prompted her to perform at every available opportunity, whether busking on sidewalks or echoing through the city’s extensive subway network. Subsequent shows brought her to stages at Brownies, Mercury Lounge, the Bowery Ballroom, and Joe’s Pub. The growing audience drawn by these repeated appearances prompted comparisons to Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, and Lucinda Williams. A contract with Bogan Records led her into the studio to capture her first album, Everything Seemed Alright, which appeared in July 2002. One month later she launched the free Five Borough Tour, a month-long series of concerts that crisscrossed New York City and included appearances by multiple guest artists. Among other acts, McBride has supported Fred Eaglesmith, Marah, and Maria Muldaur on stage, and she has collaborated on songwriting with Dan Baird, Mojo Nixon, and Eric Ambel.
