Born on 23 March 1940 in Cardiff, Wales, Evans launched her recording career in 1958 with Embassy, a label known for issuing inexpensive cover versions of current hits aimed at Woolworths shoppers across Britain. The following year she switched to Oriole Records, where she first appeared on the charts with “The Big Hurt” in 1960 and attained her highest placement two years later with “Like I Do.” Though this bright, youth-focused single climbed to number three in the UK—marking a departure from her usual material—subsequent releases could not repeat its performance. Singles continued to appear through the closing years of the decade, yet her sole extended-play release remained the 1963 set Melancholy Me. A further move in 1965 took her to CBS Records, where her established approach was soon eclipsed by newer talents; even so, her reading of David Gates’ “Never Let Him Go” stood out as a strong performance. At the close of the 1960s she ceased making records and founded a stage school of her own in Cardiff.
