Me and Cassity emerged in 1998 as Dirk Darmstaedter’s solo outlet. The singer/songwriter, born in New Jersey, had relocated with his family at age 12 and spent his formative years in Hamburg, Germany, where he co-founded the influential German alt-rock group the Jeremy Days. As that band wound down, Me and Cassity issued its self-titled debut, placing Darmstaedter in the guise of a roaming folk-rock troubadour whose early work echoed Dylan’s on-the-road atmosphere. The project supplied an ideal framework for his wide-eyed singer/songwriter reflections. Darmstaedter subsequently performed in intimate clubs and acoustic spaces across Europe, gradually building an audience. Beginning with 2002’s Hope, with a Pain Chaser, he maintained a near-annual release schedule that alternated between recordings under his own name and those credited to Me and Cassity. The sequence encompassed 2004’s Between Wake and Sleep, 2005’s Coming Up for Air, 2007’s Our Favorite City, and 2009’s Life Is No Movie. In 2010 the songwriter honored one of his key influences by releasing Dirk Sings Dylan. That same year he joined fellow German singer/songwriter Bernd Begemann for the collaborative album So It Is Every Night—their second joint effort after 2003’s This Road Does Not Lead to My House Anymore. Entering the new decade, Me and Cassity maintained its momentum, issuing the full-length The Wrong Boy in 2011 and Appearances the following year.
