After Justin Vernon departed DeYarmond Edison—the Eau Claire, Wisconsin indie-folk outfit he had joined after leaving Raleigh, North Carolina—to reach late-2000s prominence as Bon Iver, the band’s remaining members Phil Cook, Brad Cook, and Joe Westerlund persisted in North Carolina under the name Megafaun. Their elusive, unhurried lo-fi approach merged Byrds-esque vocal blends, plaintive folk guitar lines, and irregular instrumentation that suggested a less polished counterpart to Fleet Foxes, earning the group notice apart from their celebrated former colleague. The trio’s austere debut Bury the Square drew measured approval in 2008, yet the 2009 follow-up Gather, Form & Fly, released on Hometapes, provoked stronger enthusiasm, highlighted by strong notices from the Onion AV Club and Pitchfork. Heretofore, a shorter collection, surfaced in 2010, with the band’s self-titled third album arriving the next year.
