Biography
The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra of New York traces its origins nearly to the company's own establishment in the 1880s. Among its leaders across the 20th and 21st centuries stand such noted figures as Arturo Toscanini, George Szell, and James Levine.
An initiative by prominent New York families in 1880 led to the creation of a premier opera house that opened for the 1883-1884 season. August Vianesia served initially as music director until Anton Seidl, a protégé of Wagner, assumed the post in 1886; Seidl refined the ensemble into a first-class body modeled on German standards and remained until 1897. Subsequent early directors included Alfred Hertz along with Gustav Mahler, who held the role from 1908 to 1910, and Toscanini, whose tenure ran from 1908 to 1915. By the 1930s players received beginning pay around $10,000 annually—below the fees of the company's star vocalists yet above compensation at most peer ensembles—making a position with the group a coveted post that has endured as such ever since.
European-born conductors also active in symphonic repertory guided the company through the mid-20th century and afterward; these encompassed Szell, Bruno Walter from 1941 to 1951, Fritz Reiner, Erich Leinsdorf, and Dmitri Mitropoulos. The Met introduced radio transmissions of its productions starting in 1930 and television presentations from 1940, thereby heightening the orchestra's visibility because listeners encountered the music without any visual element. Such transmissions, now extended to internet platforms, continue to form a central part of the organization's activities. James Levine ranks as the most influential among later conductors; although his career concluded amid controversy, he delivered incisive readings—frequently driven by orchestral detail—over many years. Fabio Luisi followed him, after which Yannick Nézet-Séguin became music director in 2018. Apart from its operatic work the orchestra has released several standalone recordings, among them a collection of Wagner orchestral excerpts and the 2022 album A Concert for Ukraine.
