Biography
Originally known as the brother of Paul McCartney, Mike McGear adopted his stage name during the mid-'60s, soon after the Beatles achieved widespread fame, in order to sidestep any notion of capitalizing on his sibling's success. As a participant in the Scaffold, he helped produce several comedy rock recordings that found considerable popularity in the late '60s, with the singles "Thank U Very Much" and "Lily Pink" emerging as major British hits. In 1974 he completed a solo album that benefited from extensive input by Paul, who authored or co-authored nearly every song and supplied backing vocals; fellow Wings members Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, and Jimmy McCullough likewise contributed instrumental and vocal parts. Bearing an expected resemblance to Wings, the record earned modest critical interest yet failed to achieve strong sales.
