Biography
Mind Funk came together as a mid-tier collective of players hoping to ride the brief wave of funk metal interest. Its roster included vocalist Pat Dunbar, late of Uniform Choice, guitarists Louis J. Svitek and Jason Coppola along with bassist John Monte, both of the former pair having served in M.O.D., and drummer Reed St. Mark, previously with Celtic Frost. Epic Records released the group’s self-titled debut, which arrived amid considerable promotional fanfare and stirred limited press attention for its fierce blend of metal, punk, and funk, yet it failed to register with buyers. Once touring for the album concluded, St. Mark and Coppola had exited, their places filled by drummer Shawn Johnson and Jason Everman, who had previously played guitar in Nirvana and bass in Soundgarden. Epic dropped the band just prior to a planned return to the studio, leading Mind Funk to Megaforce and the 1993 release Dropped, whose title mirrored their circumstances. The follow-up, People Who Fell From the Sky, appeared in 1995.
