Minmi, born Michiko Evwana, rose through live performances to establish herself as a genuine pop star in Japan while weaving global elements—especially reggae, soca, and American hip-hop—into her sound. Unlike the tightly controlled Japanese idol system, she consistently authors her own material and oversees the bulk of production herself, retaining final say over each release. Her breakthrough arrived in 2002 with the reggae-tinged pop single “The Perfect Vision,” which climbed the Oricon charts shortly after its launch. She expanded her palette on the 2004 album Imagine by incorporating more conventional J-pop, then shifted toward soca textures on the 2005 compilation Friends, an effort that led to her reaching the finals of Trinidad’s Soca Monarch competition with the track “Sha Na Na [Japanese Wine].” A subsequent studio album appeared, followed by further greatest-hits collections, a practice widespread in the Japanese market. The 2008 anthology Minmi Best 2002-2008 reached number two on the Oricon charts and maintained strong placements for several months.
