Vivian Sarratt and Edmond Hallas bill themselves as the "Sonny & Cher of Electro-Punk" and insist they should not be grouped alongside the White Stripes. The duo prefers the identities Mommy and Daddy, a point they emphasize without qualification.

The pair first crossed paths during a 1998 philosophy course at George Mason University in Washington, D.C. In 2000 they married, relocated to New York City, and began shaping a hybrid sound that mixed folk-rock, metal, and slowcore. Their direction crystallized only after they witnessed the Gossip at the Knitting Factory during the summer of 2002; the encounter immediately drew them to the band’s fuzzed-out, guitar-driven punk approach. Within six months they were performing across England and had signed with Big Cat, the independent label previously home to Pavement, Shudder to Think, Grandaddy, and Luscious Jackson. Before 2002 closed, the limited-edition 7" Permed Past Her Prime/Take It was issued, prompting New York magazine to list the punk-rock duo among the city’s twenty-five best bands. A full-length album produced and engineered by Bob Brockmann with arrangements by Yaron Fuchs was scheduled for spring 2003.
