American musician Justin Sullivan, whose name should not be mixed up with that of New Model Army's singer, spent roughly twenty years drumming across six or so groups before unveiling his initial solo work under the Night Shop moniker during 2017. His approach echoed the folk-leaning, indie-rock-inflected style of singer/songwriter Kevin Morby, a fellow member of the Babies, and that connection informed Sullivan's first long-player, Night Shop's In the Break, which appeared in 2018. Retaining several of the same associates from Hand Habits and Woods, he issued the follow-up album Forever Night two years later in 2022.

Prior to adopting the Night Shop identity, Sullivan earned respect within indie circles for his drumming in outfits such as the Insurgent and Ringers, as well as the late-2000s project Bossy alongside Cassie Ramone, known for her role in Vivian Girls. Although Bossy proved short-lived, it opened doors to more prominent work. He first participated in the Babies, the short-term endeavor Ramone and Morby maintained together, which yielded several singles, assorted cassette releases, and a pair of albums before the pair shifted attention to individual pursuits. Subsequently Sullivan performed in Morby's touring ensemble and contributed to recordings spanning 2013 through 2016.

Sullivan debuted Night Shop with a self-titled EP issued by Oakland's 1-2-3-4 Go! Records in February 2017; the sessions featured Oh Sees bassist Tim Hellman alongside guitarist Will Ivy, who also performs with Flat Worms. Night Shop then aligned with the Woodsist subsidiary Mare Records for its first full-length effort. That album, In the Break, surfaced in September 2017 and enlisted backing support from Ivy, Meg Duffy of Hand Habits, and Anna St. Louis. In the ensuing months the project toured the United States in tandem with Waxahatchee, whose lineup included St. Louis, and with Shannon Lay.

Night Shop resurfaced in September 2020 via the EP The Fountain, released on Salinas Records. The same core personnel participated, augmented by Waxahatchee's Katie Crutchfield on vocals, Wand's Sofia Arreguin on piano, Flat Worms' Tim Hellman on bass, and Mirror Travel's Tiffanie Lanmon on drums. Woods member Jarvis Taveniere handled engineering duties and contributed multiple instruments. Taveniere later rejoined as co-producer for the second album, the retro-rock-oriented Forever Night, which Dangerbird Records issued in early 2022. Additional participants on that release encompassed Duffy, St. Louis, Spoon's Alex Fischel on keyboards and guitar, singer/songwriter Jess Williamson, and further guests.
