Biography
Having trained classically on the violin, Noel Pointer entered the jazz sphere by signing with Blue Note in the early 1970s. His albums fused light instrumental pop and fusion while incorporating vocal guest appearances. He joined United Artists in 1978, where the Hold On LP featured Patti Austin as lead singer. Later UA releases drew contributions from the Jones Girls and Patrice Rushen before Pointer moved to Liberty in 1981. He also recorded with Norman Connors and participated in sessions for numerous other artists. Pointer reemerged in 1993 on Shanachie with the album Never Lose Your Heart, his final recording; he suffered a fatal stroke on December 19, 1994, at age 39.
