Biography

Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez and Lil' Louis Vega, who operate primarily as the dance production outfit Masters at Work, launched the NuYorican Soul project with a 1996 EP before issuing a self-titled album the following year. Echoing the cross-generational approach of Guru's Jazzmatazz series, the effort paired veteran jazz artists with emerging voices to spotlight jazz, R&B, and dance, embedding Latin rhythms throughout most tracks in keeping with Gonzalez and Vega's own cultural roots.
