Biography
O Trio stands out as a choro ensemble whose ongoing work has advanced the evolution of this longstanding musical heritage. Without any percussion, the lineup draws on two veteran choro instrumentalists from Brazil alongside a globally recognized classical wind player who doubles as a skilled chorão. The musicians pursue an adaptable approach that steps away from folkloric roots yet sustains strong emotional resonance and strict adherence to choro conventions while incorporating classical influences. The three members—Maurício Carrilho on violão or acoustic guitar, Pedro Amorim on mandolin and violão tenor, and Paulo Sérgio Santos on clarinet along with soprano and alto saxes—first united in 1986 to mark Radamés Gnattali’s eightieth birthday. Following concerts across Europe, the U.S., and Japan, they issued their debut recording, the self-titled O Trio, which appeared in Europe during 1993; critics hailed the effort, and it earned the 1994 Sharp prize for best instrumental album. The group itself received the same year’s Sharp prize in the best instrumental group category. O Trio later joined forces with Teca Calazans for a 1995 album.
