Biography
Okean Elzy, whose name means "Elza's Ocean," emerged in 1994 when Svyatoslav Vakarchuk assembled the lineup in Lviv following the breakup of his earlier band Klan Tyshi. Recognized from the outset as one of Ukraine's most popular, politically charged, and commercially successful rock acts, the group honed its profile through repeated festival appearances. Their 1998 debut Tam, de Nas Nema arrived after they had already become a major attraction across both Ukraine and Russia. Follow-up releases Ya Na Nebi Buv, Model, and Supersymetriya elevated their standing further, coinciding with Vakarchuk's appointment in 2003 as an official ambassador of Ukrainian culture. Gloria, issued in 2005, delivered four chart-topping singles, while the similarly successful Mira appeared in 2007, Dolce Vita in 2010, and Zemlya in 2013.
