Established in 1963, Os Três Morais took their name from the siblings’ mother’s maiden name and united Jane Vicentino do Espírito Santo, Sidney do Espírito Santo, and Roberto do Espírito Santo, each of whom had already sung or played in assorted vocal groups and orchestras. Drawing inspiration from the Swingle Singers, the newly formed trio committed Ely Arcoverde’s “Sambachiana” to disc and began shifting away from a semi-classical repertoire toward popular song. They appeared on the prominent bossa-nova television programs Bo-64 and O Fino da Bossa, both broadcast by TV Record, and released three LPs while the original lineup remained intact. In 1970 Jane married Herondy Bueno and departed to form the duo Jane e Herondy with him; her place was taken by Vera Lúcia, formerly of Alpha Centauri. Under this revised configuration the ensemble issued an LP that featured standards such as “As Pastorinhas” by João de Barro and Noel Rosa. The original three members reunited for a 1997 performance at São Paulo’s Baiúca club during the show Parabéns Música Popular Brasileira. Separately, Jane contributed to Chico Buarque’s Chico Buarque de Hollanda by singing “Com Açúcar, Com Afeto,” a song she later recorded as a solo piece. Sidney, whose earlier affiliations included Garotos Vocalistas in 1948, Os Quatro Amigos in 1950, and Conjunto Farroupilha in 1958, achieved notable success with the Edson Borges collaboration “Além,” which multiple artists subsequently covered.
