The disco act Ottawan, fronted by Caribbean vocalists Jean Patrick (born April 6, 1954) and Annette (born November 1, 1958), actually sprang from the imagination of French production duo Daniel Vangarde and Jean Kluger. Vangarde, already known for his work alongside Dalida, the Gibson Brothers, and Sheila & B. Devotion, first spotted Jean Patrick singing with his group Black Underground inside a Paris nightclub. The producers promptly altered the band's name, reportedly settling on Ottawan during their return trip from Canada.

Released in 1980, the group's debut single "D.I.S.C.O." quickly became a major European dancefloor success and reached number two in Great Britain, where it lingered for 18 weeks. Its 1981 follow-up, "Hands Up," came close to repeating that feat by climbing to number three on the UK chart and remaining listed for 15 weeks. Jean Patrick soon left to launch the duo Pam 'n Pat, which delivered another European dance hit, "To Be Superman," in 1982. In more recent times Patrick has revived Ottawan, taking the stage across Europe with his new singing partner, Tamara.
