Coming from a family deeply rooted in music, Kouyate took up both guitar and balafon during childhood and assembled a youth band in 1966. He devoted several years to agricultural studies yet ultimately abandoned formal schooling to focus on music instead. Upon relocating to Bamako he crossed paths with Kante Manfila, then heading Les Ambassadeurs, and entered the ensemble in 1977. There he forged a close bond with bandmate Salif Keita; once Keita departed, Kouyate contributed guitar to two of his albums. At the same time Kouyate embarked on a solo trajectory that yielded several releases. In 1990 he secured a contract with a London company, resulting in an album that fused traditional elements with mellow jazz.
