Out of the Blue originated in 1984 as a platform for showcasing several of Blue Note’s rising jazz artists. Its focus rested on hard bop-oriented originals that carried forward the label’s influential 1960s tradition. Trumpeter Michael Philip Mossman, altoist Kenny Garrett, tenor man Ralph Bowen, pianist Harry Pickens, bassist Robert Hurst, and drummer Ralph Peterson formed the initial lineup; each later built a notable career. Between 1985 and 1989 the ensemble issued four albums and completed multiple well-received tours before disbanding once its members pursued individual paths. Bassist Kenny Davis entered for the third album, while altoist Steve Wilson, pianist Renee Rosnes, and drummer Billy Drummond also contributed at various points.
