Biography
One of Britain’s foremost conductors, Owain Arwel Hughes has earned equal recognition for his mastery of Danish repertoire and his command of British scores, moving with equal assurance between choral and orchestral domains. Although he established his reputation through engagements across England and Wales, his horizons widened decisively upon taking up the principal conductorship of the Ålborg Symphony Orchestra in Denmark, an appointment that also broadened the range of music he explored. His programs have therefore encompassed British staples by Elgar, Delius, and Vaughan Williams alongside an international selection embracing Beethoven, Rachmaninov, Schnittke, and numerous others. Across a discography exceeding fifty releases, he has appeared on labels such as BIS, EMI, and Warner Classics.
Born in Ton Pentre in Wales’s Rhondda Valley on 21 March 1942, Hughes is the son of composer Arwel Hughes. He pursued his training at Cardiff University and the Royal College of Music, where his mentors included Adrian Boult, Bernard Haitink, and Rudolf Kempe. During the 1970s he served as associate conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, later holding the same title with the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra from 1980 to 1986. In 1986 he established the Welsh Proms Cymru, an annual summer festival of which he remains artistic director. Throughout the same decade he also acted as principal associate conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Appointed principal conductor of the Ålborg Symphony Orchestra in 1994, Hughes became a leading advocate for composer Vagn Holmboe, resulting in an extensive series of BIS recordings that encompassed the composer’s complete cycle of fourteen symphonies, comprising the thirteen numbered works together with the unnumbered Sinfonia “In Memoriam.” He relinquished the Ålborg post in 1999. In 2003 he was named music director of the National Youth Orchestra of Wales; the following year he received the Officer of the British Empire distinction, which was upgraded to Commander of the British Empire in 2009. Hughes created Camerata Wales in 2005 and has continued as its music director. In 2008 he directed the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in a recording of Knudåge Riisager’s Benzin and additional orchestral pieces. His tenure with the National Youth Orchestra of Wales concluded in 2010. Since 2014 he has held the professorship of performance at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. In 2020, leading the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, he inaugurated a cycle of Sibelius symphonies on the Rubicon label, the second installment of which appeared in 2022.
