Biography
A key proponent of historically informed performance practices, John Eliot Gardiner established the Monteverdi Choir to present Baroque repertoire and later formed the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, an ensemble dedicated to 19th-century scores. His interpretations of Johann Sebastian Bach’s choral output receive particular acclaim, and the conductor’s own record label, Soli Deo Gloria (“To the Glory of God Only”), draws its name from the modest S.D.G. inscription that Bach placed on numerous manuscripts.
Born on April 20, 1943, in the Dorset village of Fontmell Magna, Gardiner received his earliest musical training largely on his own, participating in a local church choir and studying the violin. At age fifteen he began to conduct; while pursuing studies in history, Arabic, and medieval Spanish at Cambridge University, he also directed student ensembles there. Still an undergraduate, he led combined Oxford and Cambridge choirs on a tour through the Middle East, and in 1964 he presented Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610, then an unfamiliar work. That project gave rise to the Monteverdi Choir, which remains his principal performing group. His sole interval of formal conservatory instruction occurred in the mid-1960s, when he worked in musicology and conducting with Thurston Dart and Nadia Boulanger. In 1968 he created the Monteverdi Orchestra to accompany the choir; during the following decade the ensemble adopted period instruments and adopted the name English Baroque Soloists. With these forces Gardiner has produced several hundred recordings. Earlier in his career he also appeared regularly with modern symphony orchestras; his American debut took place in 1979 with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and between the 1980s and early 1990s he served as music director of the CBC Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Lyon, and the North German Radio Orchestra (now the NDR Elbphilharmonie). In 1990, as knowledge of appropriate instruments for Beethoven and later composers was still emerging, he founded the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, which he brought on tour in 1993 to perform the recently rediscovered Messe solennelle by Berlioz.
One of Gardiner’s most notable achievements was the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage of 2000, undertaken with the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists. Over fifty-two weeks the musicians performed every Bach cantata on the appropriate liturgical date, frequently in churches connected with the composer’s life. The resulting recordings appeared on Soli Deo Gloria in elaborately produced editions accompanied by Gardiner’s own essays exploring each work’s significance; those essays later formed the basis of his 2013 book Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven. Additional recordings have been issued on Deutsche Grammophon, Philips, and other labels. His cycle of Schumann symphonies with the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique helped initiate a broader preference for leaner ensembles in that repertoire. In 2004 he and the Monteverdi Choir retraced the medieval Camino de Santiago across Spain, performing Spanish music from the period. Guest engagements have included the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra. Even in later years Gardiner’s recording activity has remained undiminished, often yielding six or more releases annually. In 2019 he and the Monteverdi Choir issued Love Is Come Again, drawn from the Springhead Easter Play, a mime production presented yearly at the conductor’s family home and originally staged by his mother. The coronavirus pandemic of 2020 caused only minor interruption, since further projects were already prepared, among them a modern-instrument account of two Schumann symphonies with the London Symphony Orchestra. He returned in 2022 with the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists on a new Deutsche Grammophon recording of Bach’s St. John Passion, BWV 245. His honors encompass appointment as Commander of the British Empire in 1990 and as Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in France in 2011.
