Biography
At the Muzieklyceum in Amsterdam, Frans Brüggen received the first diploma ever conferred in recorder. A short period of musicology studies at the University of Amsterdam followed, after which he devoted himself fully to performance and quickly ranked among the leading recorder players of his generation. His playing was distinguished by a luminous, transparent tone and by searching interpretive judgment. An outstanding pedagogue as well, Brüggen raised the instrument’s global standing through the master classes he gave and the concerts he played. He appeared regularly on the podium as a conductor and directed his own experimental ensemble, Sour Cream. He also served as professor of recorder at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague.
