Biography
Trevor Pinnock established The English Concert, among Europe's most enduring ensembles devoted to period instruments and voices, and once served as its conductor before relinquishing that post. His path opened as a harpsichordist, an identity to which he has returned in later decades.
Born December 16, 1946, in Canterbury, England, he grew up with a father who worked as a publisher, a mother who sang, and a grandfather who led a Salvation Army band. Early musical training arrived through service as a boy chorister at Canterbury Cathedral and attendance at its choir school. A Foundation Scholar at the Royal College of Music, he studied with Ralph Downes and Millicent Silver and collected prizes in both harpsichord and organ. An RCM registrar cautioned that a harpsichord career would prove unsustainable, yet Pinnock observed the rising early music movement in Europe, especially under the guidance of harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt.
He formed the Galliard Harpsichord Trio, which first appeared at the Royal Festival Hall in 1966. The players began with modern instruments before adopting historically informed practices at a moment when such instruments remained uncommon, placing the group at the forefront of emerging techniques. Pinnock also appeared as a harpsichord soloist, making his London debut in 1968.
He briefly explored twentieth-century harpsichord works by Falla and Poulenc, then concentrated on Baroque and Renaissance music as that repertoire gained momentum. The album Trevor Pinnock at the Victoria and Albert Museum appeared in 1974. The next year he served as harpsichordist for the world premiere of Rameau’s final opera, Les Boréades, led by John Eliot Gardiner. The Galliard Harpsichord Trio expanded from three to seven players and adopted the name The English Concert for its debut under that title in 1972. The ensemble soon grew to chamber-orchestra dimensions and presented Baroque and early Classical music on historically appropriate instruments.
The English Concert reached the BBC Proms in 1980 and completed its first American tour in 1983, eventually ranking among the world’s leading period-instrument groups and receiving praise from Leonard Bernstein. From Handel’s oratorio Solomon, HWV 67, in 1986 onward, the ensemble added larger-scale Baroque works to its repertory. Pinnock made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1988, conducting Handel’s Giulio Cesare, HWV 17. He has appeared as guest conductor with the Boston, San Francisco, and Detroit Symphony Orchestras. In New York in 1989 he founded The Classical Band, and between 1991 and 1997 he held the post of principal conductor of the National Arts Center Orchestra in Ottawa, Canada. He resigned as director of The English Concert in 2003 to concentrate on harpsichord performance.
Pinnock has remained active in later years, touring internationally with the European Brandenburg Ensemble, for which he has recorded Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, and undertaking educational projects. His catalog exceeds 150 recordings as conductor and harpsichordist, with five or more albums often issued in a single year. Many English Concert releases appeared on Archiv Produktion, the early-music division of Deutsche Grammophon. He has continued recording into the 2020s, focusing frequently on Bach at the harpsichord. J.S. Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier 1 appeared on Deutsche Grammophon in 2020; the set was completed in 2022. The following year he conducted the Royal Academy of Music Soloists Ensemble on the album Bach: Partitas Re-Imagined for Small Orchestra by Thomas Oehler. In 1992 Pinnock was named Commander of the British Empire.
