Biography
By his twenties, Antonius "Ton" Koopman had already established a distinctive place in the musical world and was ascending toward prominence as one of the leading figures in the early music movement. Both as a conductor and as a keyboardist, he ranks among the foremost interpreters of the repertoire.
Born in the Dutch town of Zwolle on October 12, 1944, Koopman pursued a classical education before moving to Amsterdam, where he trained in organ under Simon C. Jansen, harpsichord under Gustav Leonhardt, and musicology. From the beginning his focus lay on reviving older repertory through period instruments and historically informed performance practice. In 1966 he launched his first Baroque orchestra, launching a career that has now spanned more than four decades of performance, conducting, and scholarship.
As a keyboardist, Koopman has appeared on leading stages across five continents and amassed an extensive discography, performing on many of Europe’s most significant historic organs. He directs from the harpsichord with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, ensembles he himself founded, and he regularly appears as guest soloist with orchestras worldwide. He has taught harpsichord at the Sweelinck Conservatory, holds a professorship at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, and is an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music in London. His earliest international distinctions were a pair of Prix d’Excellence awarded for organ and harpsichord.
Koopman’s achievements as a conductor of early music have brought further honors, among them two Edison Prizes, a 3M Prize, a Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, the French Grand Prix du Disque and Prix Hector Berlioz, Grammy nominations in both the United States and Britain, and the Silver Phonograph from the Dutch recording industry. Much of his catalog was created with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, whose joint recordings encompass composers such as Biber, Charpentier, and Vivaldi. He is best known, however, for his large-scale Bach projects: between 1994 and 2004 he conducted and recorded the complete cantatas, and he has also issued the full organ works and Passions, including his own reconstruction of the lost Markuspassion. Although he has stated that he would not perform music composed after Mozart’s death in 1791, he made an exception with a 2007 recording of organ and harpsichord concertos by Francis Poulenc. In 2003 he established his own label, Antoine Marchand Records, and was admitted to the Order of the Netherlands Lion. He became artist-in-residence with the Cleveland Orchestra in 2011 while continuing to teach at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the University of Leiden. During the fall of 2021 he sustained an active pandemic-era schedule, appearing as conductor, harpsichordist, and organist with, among others, the National Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Alongside his solo career, Koopman remains in steady demand as a guest conductor. His recordings have appeared chiefly on Erato and Challenge Classics, and by the early 2020s his discography comprised at least 280 releases. In 2021 Challenge Classics issued his complete recording of the chamber music of Dietrich Buxtehude.
