Biography
Gustav Maria Leonhardt ranked among the foremost pioneers of the Early Music revival. Serving initially as a harpsichordist and organist before taking up the baton, he played a decisive role in turning the Netherlands into a major hub for historically informed performances.
After completing a classical curriculum he enrolled at the Schola Cantorum in Basle, where Eduard Müller instructed him in both organ and harpsichord. His first public appearance took place in Vienna in 1950, when he presented J.S. Bach’s The Art of the Fugue on the harpsichord. He spent the following year pursuing musicology in Vienna and then held the post of harpsichord professor at the Vienna Academy of Music from 1952 to 1955.
In 1954 he was appointed harpsichord professor at the Amsterdam Conservatory while simultaneously becoming organist at the city’s historic Waalse Kerk, whose magnificent Baroque instrument had been constructed by Christian Müller in 1733. The following year he founded the Gustav Leonhardt Consort, among the earliest ensembles devoted to period instruments and one that remained influential throughout its existence. The group’s activities soon expanded to include his direction of both instrumental and choral forces in Baroque and Classical repertoire, with special emphasis on the works of J.S. Bach.
His scholarly focus centered on the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. As a musicologist he undertook detailed investigations into instrument construction and technique, historical performing practices, and ornamentation. In his teaching he guided a generation of Dutch artists that included keyboardist Bob van Asperen, flutist Barthold Kuijken, and cellist Anner Bylsma.
Leonhardt portrayed Johann Sebastian Bach in Jean-Marie Straub’s 1967 biographical film, performing the composer’s music on both organ and harpsichord. During 1967 and 1968 he also served as visiting professor at Harvard University. Leading the Leonhardt Consort, he contributed to Teldec’s comprehensive Bach cantata project, alternating volumes with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Vienna Concentus Musicus. He remained a prolific recording artist for Teldec before moving to Sony Classics in the 1990s. His interpretations were characteristically restrained, reflecting the scholarly, academic orientation of the first wave of period-instrument performance—an approach that both attracted disciples and provoked a later reaction favoring more animated and speculative readings.
A distinguished editor and scholar of Baroque music, Leonhardt devoted particular attention to the works of Sweelinck and produced a major monograph on The Art of the Fugue. He received several honorary degrees and was awarded the Netherlands’ Erasmus Prize in 1990.
