Biography
Baroque violinist Fabio Biondi emerged as a trailblazer for historically informed performance practices in Italy, appearing both as a solo performer and as founder-director of the Europa Galante ensemble. His incisive, vigorous approach has shaped Baroque interpretations for decades while his repertoire has expanded to span three centuries.
Born in Palermo, Sicily, on March 15, 1961, Biondi studied violin under Salvatore Cicero, who later granted him lifetime use of the 1766 Carlo Ferdinando Gagliano instrument he plays today. By age twelve he was already appearing as concerto soloist with the RAI National Symphony Orchestra. During his teenage years he encountered period-instrument players and quickly developed a strong interest in Baroque and Classical violin models, whose distinctions lie in their strings, bridges, and bows rather than in the body of the instrument. At sixteen he performed on Baroque violin at Vienna’s Musikverein and soon afterward assembled the Stendhal Quartet, a historical-instrument ensemble that presented music from every era—including newly commissioned contemporary works—on instruments appropriate to each period. He later attended the Rome Conservatory, where he received the institution’s highest violin award.
In the late 1980s Biondi collaborated with leading period ensembles such as Jordi Savall’s Hespèrion XX (subsequently renamed Hespèrion XXI) and Les Musiciens du Louvre. His decisive career step occurred in 1990 when he established the Baroque group Europa Galante. The ensemble’s first recording, Vivaldi: String Concerti, appeared almost at once on the Opus 111 label. As Italy’s inaugural historical-instrument Baroque ensemble, Europa Galante benefited from long-suppressed local demand; within a few seasons the group produced several best-selling releases, among them a Four Seasons set that reached 500,000 copies, and secured engagements at major venues including New York’s Lincoln Center, Rome’s Accademia di Santa Cecilia (where it has accompanied opera productions), and London’s Royal Albert Hall. Biondi has additionally led modern orchestras such as the Radio France Philharmonic and the Gran Canaria Symphony Orchestra.
His extensive discography encompasses both solo and conducting projects on the Opus 111, Virgin Classics, and Glossa labels; a 2019 Glossa release presented The 1690 “Tuscan” Stradivari. In 2018 he directed Europa Galante in a period-instrument account of Verdi’s early opera Macbeth. During 2022 the ensemble issued multiple recordings, among them Mendelssohn, devoted to the composer’s string works. By that date Biondi’s catalogue contained roughly one hundred releases.
