Born in Blackrod, Lancashire, England, on May 17, 1958, Ivor Bolton trained in music at Clare College, Cambridge University, followed by studies at the Royal College of Music in London and a postgraduate year at the National Opera Studio. While completing that final period of instruction, he took on leadership of the Schola Cantorum, the chamber choir affiliated with Oxford University. In 1984 he established the St. James Baroque Players, an instrumental ensemble that rose to prominence under his guidance and issued several notable recordings, among them the 1996 Teldec account of Charpentier’s Te Deum; he relinquished the music directorship in 2005, after which James O’Donnell assumed the post. For a single season spanning 1991–1992 he also served as music director of the English Touring Opera.

Bolton’s connection with the Glyndebourne Festival began in 1982 and led to his appointment as music director of the festival’s touring company, a role he held for five seasons starting in 1992. During those years he made significant operatic debuts at the Bavarian State Opera in 1994 and at Covent Garden in 1995. Concurrently he held the principal conductorship of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra from 1994 to 1996. From 2004 to 2016 he directed the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg, thereafter continuing as conductor laureate. At the 2004 Salzburg Festival he led a production of Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi featuring Anna Netrebko as Giulietta. During the 2010–2011 season he conducted Britten’s Billy Budd at De Nederlandse Opera. Since 2012 he has served as chief conductor of the Dresden Festival Orchestra. In 2015 he was named artistic director of the Teatro Real in Madrid and designated chief conductor of the Basel Symphony Orchestra beginning with the 2016–2017 season; both appointments were extended through 2024–2025, at which point his tenure at the Teatro Real concludes.

On the podium Bolton is widely recognized for incisive readings of Baroque operas by Handel and Purcell as well as later works by Mozart, Bellini, and Rossini, while his orchestral interests, though weighted toward early music, also encompass Mendelssohn, Franz Berwald, and James MacMillan. As a harpsichordist he has earned particular praise for performances and recordings of J. S. Bach’s harpsichord concertos. His extensive discography, issued on labels including Deutsche Grammophon, RCA, and ASV, includes a complete cycle of Bruckner symphonies with the Mozarteum Orchestra on Oehms Classics, together with operas such as Cesti’s L’Orontea and Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto. Further releases comprise the 2020 album Secret Fauré III with Benjamin Appl and Katja Stuber, and Joseph Haydn’s Il Ritorno di Tobia, again with the Mozarteum Orchestra. In 2024 he led that ensemble in the recording Bruckner: Symphonie in D-moll ‘Nullte’, WAB 100. At the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours Bolton was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
