Biography
After releasing four studio albums and scoring a pair of hit singles—including the Top Ten entry “Get Off”—as part of the dance-pop outfit Foxy, vocalist Ish Ledesma formed the band Oxo.
Joined by guitarist Orlando, bass player Frank Garcia, and drummer Freddy Alwag, the group landed a contract with Geffen and issued its self-titled debut album in 1983.
That spring the ensemble notched a hit with the catchy yet vacuous single “Whirly Girl,” which remained on the charts for nearly four months.
The track stood as Oxo’s only hit; although the band quickly slipped into cut-out-bin obscurity, “Whirly Girl” survived by appearing on numerous new wave compilations.
A former member of the TK Records house band—the label best known for KC & the Sunshine Band—Ledesma kept performing and producing dance records.
