A quartet hailing from Seattle, Painted Shield fuses disparate styles into an intense strain of alternative rock anchored by earthy lead vocals and aggressively processed, mechanical keyboard layers. The project endured an abortive beginning in the opening years of the 2010s, only to reconvene in 2020 and deliver its self-titled debut. Their energetic second album, Painted Shield 2, followed in 2022, with Painted Shield 3 emerging two years later.

The lineup unites Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, folk-pop songwriter Mason Jennings, acclaimed session drummer Matt Chamberlain, and Seattle-based R&B keyboard virtuoso Brittany Davis. Gossard and Chamberlain first captured instrumental sketches together in 2013. A mutual acquaintance who managed Jennings facilitated an introduction; Gossard forwarded the files, and Jennings responded by supplying lyrics and vocals. Pleased with the results, they placed one track, “Knife Fight,” on Pearl Jam’s members-only Ten Club vinyl series, after which the endeavor went dormant. When touring in support of Pearl Jam’s 2020 album Gigaton collapsed under pandemic restrictions, the core trio resumed work remotely. The addition of keyboardist and backing vocalist Brittany Davis supplied the final element, allowing them to complete a full album’s worth of material.

Painted Shield appeared in December 2020 on Loosegroove, the imprint Gossard had recently revived—the same label that originally issued Queens of the Stone Age’s debut in 1998. Its sound merged alternative rock, psychedelia, rhythm & blues, roots-oriented singing, and industrial keyboard textures. The band resurfaced in 2021 with the singles “4th of July” and “Dead Man’s Dream,” both of which appeared on the dynamic follow-up Painted Shield 2. Painted Shield 3 arrived in 2024, an intensely collaborative set that expanded the group’s range with still more timbres and stylistic directions.
