Biography
Violinist Papa John Creach drew rock listeners’ attention in 1970 after enlisting with Jefferson Airplane and its offshoot Hot Tuna. Already in his early fifties and steeped in prior jazz and blues work, he stood apart from bandmates who had yet to reach 30. Even so, his electrified violin supplied the Airplane’s closing era with an added psychedelic dimension. After the group disbanded in 1972, Creach had already started issuing solo projects on its Grunt imprint. Jefferson Airplane later reformed as Jefferson Starship, and Creach remained aboard through the million-selling Red Octopus album of 1975. He kept producing solo recordings until 1992, the year he issued Papa Blues. Papa John Creach succumbed to heart failure in 1994 at age 76.
