Biography
In the realm of New Orleans rhythm & blues, Paul Gayten stood out as a foundational presence whose career encompassed roles as bandleader, producer, label owner, and temporary manager of Chess Records' West Coast division. Nephew of blues-piano legend Little Brother Montgomery, he once directed one of New Orleans' leading ensembles yet stepped away from performing in 1956, redirecting his energies first into production and then into founding the California-based Pzazz label, home at one point to Louis Jordan. Gayten composed Larry Darnell's 1949 classic "For You My Love" and notched several Top Ten hits under his own name on Regal and DeLuxe from 1947 to 1950, including a number featuring vocalist Annie Laurie.
