Piotr Rubik has long operated at the intersection of light classical forms and pop shaped by orchestral arrangements. After completing studies at Warsaw's Chopin Academy, he launched his career as a cellist with the Jeunesses Musicales and subsequently studied scoring with Ennio Morricone.

The 2004 oratorium Holy Cross of Golgotha launched Rubik to sudden prominence in Polish music by fusing disparate strata of sophistication; the work constituted the opening panel of his Holy Cross Triptych. Its successor, Tu Es Petrus, delivered Rubik's widest recognition and drew on the life of Pope John Paul II; conceived originally as a gift for the pontiff, the score was completed only after John Paul II's death. Several selections from Tu Es Petrus were reshaped for radio rotation, and Rubik's popularity continued to climb.

The trilogy's concluding section examined the paired September catastrophes of the Nazi invasion of Poland and the September 11 attacks in the U.S. As Rubik's output gravitated further toward pop, critical regard diminished even while public purchases of his recordings increased. Emboldened by a tribute to Krakow that generated several further pop projects, he moved decisively into that sphere with the 2008 album Habitat, which featured Rubik at the piano alongside a DJ and beatboxer on selected passages.
