After collaborating with American techno innovators such as Juan Atkins and Derrick May, British producer Charles Webster, whose refined style encompassed nu-groove and trip-hop soul, relocated to the United States. In addition to his roles as engineer and recording artist, he contributed to projects for R&S and Hardkiss yet established his reputation through the Love from San Francisco imprint. Under the Presence moniker, Webster crafted acid-tinged tracks including "My Baby," "A Better Day," and "Sense of Danger" that set benchmarks for deep house, earning greater recognition in Britain than in America. The 1995 release of a Love from San Francisco compilation preceded the long-awaited arrival of Presence's first full-length album in 1999.
