Puhdys stand as the premier ensemble in East German rock, having established themselves formally during 1969 within Oranienburg after the musicians had already collaborated from 1965 onward. The group’s moniker derives from the initial letters of its founding members’ given names, originally including Peter Meyer handling keyboards, Udo Jacob at the drums, Harry Jeske providing bass, along with Dieter Herttrampf managing both vocals and guitar. Gunter Wosylus took over drumming duties from Jacob by 1969, at which point Dieter Birr also integrated as guitarist and vocalist. Starting in 1971, the ensemble commenced sessions for the government-operated Amiga Records imprint, issuing an inaugural single during that same year followed by their first full-length record in 1974. Those early efforts reflected a progressive rock orientation strongly influenced by British hard rock acts such as Deep Purple. During the middle portion of the 1980s, Puhdys incorporated elements of new wave along with synthesizer touches in efforts to remain current, yet the collective dissolved toward the close of that decade. A reunion concert in 1991 sparked renewed activity, after which Puhdys have sustained performances and releases across multiple lineups continuously.
