Puss N Boots originated as an occasional side project for Norah Jones, Sasha Dobson, and Catherine Popper, centering their sets on American country, folk, and jazz material that spans the middle of the twentieth century while occasionally extending further into the past or forward in time. Their first album, the 2014 release No Fools, No Fun, mixed self-penned tracks with outside material, a balance the band maintained on the follow-up, Sister, which appeared in 2020.

The group came together in 2008 when Jones and Dobson began using the project to develop their guitar skills. Popper soon completed the lineup, and the three musicians spent several years performing in New York clubs while refining an Americana-based songbook. Wider attention arrived after they performed a version of the Band’s “Twilight” at a tribute concert honoring the late Levon Helm. Five years after forming, the trio signed with Blue Note in 2013 and began preparing their first record, which drew on both original compositions and covers as well as a combination of studio and live recordings. Issued during summer 2014, No Fools, No Fun was promoted through a headlining U.S. tour and support dates for Neil Young the following year.

In late 2019 the band issued the holiday EP Dear Santa, then delivered their second studio album, Sister, in early 2020. That collection again featured both original songs and reinterpretations, among them numbers previously associated with Tom Petty, Dolly Parton, and Concrete Blonde.
