In 1983, Luiz Carlos on guitar and his friend Paulinho on bass launched the neo-pagode outfit Raça Negra in São Paulo’s working-class neighborhood of Vila Nhocuné. The band’s widespread appeal stems largely from its fluid, sensual dance routines, heartfelt romantic songwriting, smooth melodic lines, and irresistibly memorable choruses. After recruiting fellow musician Fena to handle percussion, the core pair soon expanded to include Fernando Monstrinho, Fininho, Gabú—who departed in 1997—and Edson Café. A 1991 demo tape earned the group a deal with RGE, leading to the release that same year of its debut album, which spotlighted the track “Caroline,” penned by Luiz Carlos. Additional standouts from that record included “Quero Ver Você Chorar,” “Somente Você,” and “Chega.” Television appearances in both Rio and São Paulo followed the initial breakthrough, while the striking visual style of the choreography prompted further bookings and secured the ensemble a national following. Among Raça Negra’s other notable successes are “Cigana,” “Quando Te Encontrei,” “Cheia de Manias,” “Doce Paixão,” and “Me Leva Junto com Você.”
