Biography
Randy Weeks, a singer, songwriter, and guitarist originally from Minnesota, helped form the Los Angeles country-rock group the Lonesome Strangers. Their 1986 album Lonesome Pine contained his composition “Ton of Shame.” The band’s 1989 self-titled release included “Daddy’s Gone Gray,” while the 1997 album Land of Opportunity featured both “Fine Way to Treat Me” and “Ton of Shame.” All three songs were written jointly with the group’s co-leader, Jeff Rymes.
Weeks supplied vocals for Dwight Yoakam’s Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room (1988) and Under the Covers (1997). He also sang and played several instruments on the 1989 self-titled album by Chris Gaffney & the Cold Hard Facts, which contained his song “I Was Just Feeling Good.” Further session work appears on releases by Pete Anderson, Rick Shea, Ramsay Midwood, Anny Celsi, Dee Lannon, and Tony Gilkyson. The 2001 film Shallow Hal used his recording of “Countryside with You” on its soundtrack.
His most widely covered composition, “Can't Let Go,” has been recorded by the Burden Brothers, Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time, Mason Daring, Hometown News, and Lucinda Williams; the last of these versions was featured on the 1998 movie Jack Frost. HighTone Records issued Weeks’ debut solo album, Madeline, on March 13, 2000. He self-released Sold Out at the Cinema on June 6, 2004, and followed it with Sugarfinger on August 22, 2006. After relocating from Los Angeles to Austin, TX, he signed with Certifiable Records, which released his fourth album, Going My Way, on February 24, 2009.
