Biography
Born on an Air Force base in what was then British Guyana, Ronald Bertram Greaves spent his childhood on a Seminole reservation and counted Sam Cooke among his uncles. He relocated to England in 1963 and fronted Sonny Childe & the TNT's as lead vocalist. The 1969 single "Take a Letter Maria" delivered his greatest success, merging soap-opera-style storytelling with soulful vocals to reach number two on the pop chart and number ten on the R&B chart. A cover of "Always Something There to Remind Me" went nowhere commercially, prompting his exit from Atlantic's Atco imprint. Another attempt arrived in 1977 on the Bareback label, yet it failed to reignite his momentum. R.B. Greaves died in September 2012 at age 68.
