Biography
Formed in the United Kingdom during 1982, the ensemble initially featured Simon Toulson-Clark on vocals and guitar, Julian Close on saxophone, Martin Nickson on drums, Rob Legge on bass and Paddy Talbot on keyboards. Minor success arrived via their independent release of ‘Chenko’, which led to a contract with WEA Records and a simultaneous reduction in personnel that left Clark and Close operating as a duo. In the summer of 1985 the pair scored a UK Top 3 hit with the engaging ‘Lean On Me (Ah-Li-Ayo)’. The following year brought a matching Top 10 result for ‘For America’. Their debut album The Circle And The Square climbed to number 73, yet a lengthy recording hiatus caused Red Box to lose momentum. Four years elapsed before the release of the follow-up Motive, from which none of the accompanying singles entered the charts.
