Renegade Soundwave came together in London toward the end of the 1980s and fused a punk-industrial approach with dub and dancefloor electronica, aligning themselves alongside other sonic disruptors of the era such as Cabaret Voltaire, Skinny Puppy, and Meat Beat Manifesto. Gary Asquith, Danny Briottet, and Carl Bonnie made up the initial lineup, issuing their first release, the 1987 single "Kray Twins," via Rhythm King before shifting to Mute in 1988 to put out the Biting My Nails EP. Although the group devoted a couple of years to album sessions, the near-simultaneous appearance of Soundclash and In Dub provided some validation. Their sole chart success arrived when "Probably a Robbery," taken from Soundclash, entered the British Top 40 at the start of 1990; however, Bonnie departed soon afterward to pursue solo work. Asquith and Briottet then withdrew for several years, resurfacing in 1994 via the single "Renegade Soundwave" alongside the album How You Doin?. Having completed their debut live performance toward the close of 1994, the remaining pair followed with Brixton and The Next Chapter of Dub in 1995. RSW 87-95 appeared as a compilation the next year.
