Biography
Richard Julian, a folk singer who has earned underground respect as a songwriter, possesses a flair for memorable melodies paired with a style uniquely his own. Originating from Arden, DE, he trained classically on piano in his youth and began penning original material during his early teens. A planned relocation to Los Angeles carried him only as far as Las Vegas, where he worked as a keyboardist alongside several prominent cocktail singers. After a year in that city he headed to New York City, landing a recording contract within months of his arrival. His self-titled debut on Blackbird/Sire introduced him to a national audience and drew positive notices. The next year brought Smash Palace, a broader collection that displayed his skill at arranging numerous instruments together. Though strong, the album produced little commercial gain, and the label parted ways with him before 2000. He kept performing live and writing new songs until Good Life appeared in 2002, the same year Art Garfunkel covered “Young and Free” from the first album.
