Biography
Rick Astley first captured worldwide attention through his inescapable 1987 single “Never Gonna Give You Up,” establishing him as a defining figure in British pop whose rich, deep voice reflected a deep affinity for classic soul and R&B. Rising to fame almost instantly, he claimed the top spot on the U.K. albums chart with Whenever You Need Somebody in 1987 and returned to the Top Ten the following year with Hold Me in Your Arms; both releases also entered the Top 20 of the Billboard 200 and yielded additional successes such as “Together Forever” and “Whenever You Need Somebody.” Seeking greater artistic control, he parted ways with his longtime production team to issue 1991’s Free, after which he largely withdrew from public view. His 2005 album Portrait marked a tentative return, yet it was the “rickrolling” internet phenomenon—built around the video for his signature hit—that unexpectedly revived interest; Astley responded with amusement, and the resulting online momentum helped him secure the Best Act Ever award at the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards. The 2016 release 50, an organic, soul-infused set recorded to mark his fiftieth birthday, reclaimed the top of the U.K. Albums Chart, and subsequent projects such as 2018’s Beautiful Life and 2023’s Are We There Yet? have sustained his creative resurgence.
Born in 1966 in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, England, Astley began performing as a member of his local church choir. During his teenage years he also took up drumming in Give Way and FBI, groups that specialized in ’60s rock and northern soul. In 1985 he assumed vocal duties for FBI, an opportunity that drew the notice of producer Pete Waterman. Stock, Aitken & Waterman soon signed him and supplied the meticulously polished singles “Never Gonna Give You Up” and “Together Forever,” the former spending five weeks at number one in Britain while simultaneously topping charts in twenty-five countries, the United States among them. Those tracks introduced his debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody, which itself reached number one in England, Germany, and Spain and climbed to number ten on the Billboard 200.
Eager to capitalize on his initial breakthrough, Astley followed up swiftly with 1988’s Hold Me in Your Arms. On that record he divided production duties, entrusting some tracks to Stock, Aitken & Waterman while handling others himself alongside Phil Harding, Ian Curnow, and Daize Washbourn. Further hit singles such as “She Wants to Dance with Me” and “Take Me to Your Heart” propelled the album to number eight in the U.K. and number nineteen on the Billboard 200. Growing weary of the Stock, Aitken & Waterman aesthetic, Astley ended the partnership and resurfaced in 1991 with the soul-oriented Free. Co-produced with Gary Stevenson, the album reached the U.K. Top Ten and the U.S. Top 40, buoyed by the Top Ten single “Cry for Help,” yet it underperformed relative to its predecessors, and the subsequent Body & Soul failed to chart at all.
After stepping away from music for several years, Astley reappeared in the mid-2000s with the covers collection Portrait. Around the same period he became the unwitting centerpiece of the “rickrolling” meme, in which the video for “Never Gonna Give You Up” was used in online pranks. Rather than object, he embraced the joke with evident irony and good humor, a stance that strengthened his public appeal and, aided by fan-driven campaigns, earned him the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards trophy for Best Act Ever. Throughout the 2010s he maintained visibility through tours and a residency as a DJ on London’s Magic FM, though new recordings remained absent until 2016’s 50, whose chart-topping success in Britain encouraged him to spend more time writing in his home studio.
Most of 2017 was devoted to crafting fresh material that coalesced into Beautiful Life, released in summer 2018 and peaking at number six on the U.K. Albums Chart. The next year he assembled the retrospective The Best of Me, which featured a stripped-down pianoforte version of “Never Gonna Give You Up.” In September 2021 Astley teamed with the band Blossoms for a pair of concerts devoted to Smiths covers; the collaboration was revived at the 2023 Glastonbury Festival. Also in 2023 he issued Are We There Yet?, his ninth studio album and the third he produced independently at his London home studio. The set, anchored by the gospel-tinged singles “Dippin’ My Feet” and “Never Gonna Stop,” drew on his longstanding soul and Americana influences.
