Hailing from a family immersed in music, Peterson brings considerable skill to the keyboard. His approach blends blues, rock, and classic jazz idioms in a manner reminiscent of George Benson yet distinctly less inclined toward pop appeal. He put out the album Smile Blue in 1991 on the Mesa/Bluemoon label, enlisting his brothers Billy and Paul among the musicians. The decade that followed yielded Tear Can Tell in 1995 and Souvenir in 1999. Across the 2000s he contributed to recordings by an array of jazz and pop figures, among them Stevie Nicks, John Mayer, David Sanborn, Jessy J, Kirk Whalum, Al Jarreau, Patti Austin, and Larry Carlton.
