Biography
Emerging in the 1990s as one of hard bop’s most striking tenor saxophonists, Oakland, California-born Robert Stewart first approached the instrument only at age seventeen. By absorbing the approaches of Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Sonny Rollins, and John Coltrane, together with the example of his mentor Pharoah Sanders, he rapidly forged a robust personal sound. His recording career opened with the 1994 release Judgement and continued the following year with In the Gutta.
