Biography
Robin Kenyatta’s alto saxophone work often projected fierce energy and spirit, yet his recording career followed an uneven course marked by inconsistent quality. Peak results emerged in hard bop and free settings, where his solos blended intensity with imaginative detail. At other moments he pursued contemporary pieces whose heavy production left them largely forgettable. During the mid-’60s he performed with Bill Dixon and took part in the New York concert series “The October Revolution in Jazz,” which Dixon co-sponsored. Across the mid- and late ’60s he appeared on recordings by the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, Roswell Rudd, Sonny Stitt, Dixon, Archie Shepp, and Barry Miles before leading groups under his own name. Further sessions with Alan Silva and Andrew Hill followed in the ’70s. Instrumental pop drew his attention in the late ’70s, while the ’80s and ’90s found him navigating a middle ground among fusion, instrumental pop, and his earlier hard bop and free music foundations. His albums appeared on Vortex/Atlantic, ECM, ITM, and Jazz Dance.
